About the Icelandic language
Icelandic is a North Germanic language, and it is closely related to Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Faroese. The first texts in Icelandic date back to the 12th century, and there are approximately 320,000 speakers who predominantly live in Iceland.
After achieving their independence in 1944, they began replacing words borrowed from Danish. In the 60’s, they created a committee to create and promote new words for new concepts, such as microwave or mobile phone, which might have otherwise entered the language in the form of ‘loanwords’.
The film industry is a growing industry in Iceland, with its amazing landscapes making it the perfect location for many series and films. However, when it comes to translating film titles into Icelandic, well, things can get a little “creative”. Lethal Weapon became Tveir á toppnum (Two at the top), and North by Northwest became Þriðji maðurinn ósýnilegi (The invisible third man).
Rest assured that our specialized creative translation services will help your brand to effectively communicate your company’s values, products and services in Icelandic without straying from the storyline.
